What are diamonds?
For centuries, diamonds are highly valued gemstones composed almost entirely of the carbon element. Diamonds are formed deep within the Earth's mantle under extreme heat and pressure, which causes carbon atoms to bond in a unique crystal structure. This structure gives diamonds their exceptional hardness, making them the hardest natural material known. Diamonds have many uses, from wedding and engagement rings, to diamond jewellery and even industrial uses as well.
Hardness
Diamonds are rated as a 10 on the Mohs scale, which means that it is the hardest material. Diamonds are incredibly resistant to scratching. Therefore, diamonds are perfect for use in wedding and engagement rings for a lifetime, to symbolize endless love for each other.
Brilliance
When diamonds are cut and polished, they have the ability to refract and disperse light in beautiful ways. Diamonds sparkle intensely, a quality that makes them popular in jewellery.
Rarity
While diamonds are relatively common and can be found in many places worldwide, gem-quality diamonds are relatively rare, contributing to their high value. Usually, only the best diamonds that are colourless or almost colourless will be used in diamond jewellery and engagement rings.
Other uses
Aside from their use in diamond jewellery and engagement rings, diamonds are also used in industrial factories for cutting, grinding, and drilling because of their hardness. Often times, industrial tools are coated with diamond dust to make them sharper and more durable.
Diamonds also come in various colors, though colourless diamonds are the most popular. Other diamond colors like yellow, pink, blue, and even black are known as "fancy diamonds" and can be quite valuable, selling for millions of dollars. Read on for more insights from our expert guide and industry professionals.

4C's of diamonds
The 4 C's of diamonds is the global standard to grade the quality of diamonds. Higher quality diamonds are rare and they shine more beautifully, which makes them more valuable. The most popular grading system is from the Gemological Institute of America (GIA).
Colour
Diamonds come in many colours like yellow and pink, but when it comes to traditional white diamonds, less colour generally means a higher value. Color is graded from D (colorless) to Z (light yellow or brown). The closer to colorless a diamond is, the rarer and more valuable it tends to be. The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) grading system is the industry standard. Usually, engagement and wedding rings, as well as diamond jewellery, would use diamonds with colours from D to J. Sometimes, diamond jewellery would include those from K to R. Please keep in mind that diamonds with colour grading from D to J generally look more beautiful, while diamonds from N colour grading onwards will look yellowish.

Cut
The cut is perhaps the most important of the 4 Cs in terms of a diamond's beauty. It refers to how well a diamond has been cut, polished, shaped and faceted to reflect light. A well-cut diamond will reflect light internally and back through the top of the stone, maximizing brilliance. Common cut grades include Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, and Poor. Diamonds with excellent cut will look more beautiful and are more valuable. When buying engagement and wedding jewellery, or diamond jewellery, diamonds with Excellent (Ex) and Very Good (VG) grading are more sought after. Diamonds with poor cutting will not look as sharp as those that are well cut.

Clarity
Clarity measures the presence of internal flaws (inclusions) or surface blemishes in a diamond. The fewer inclusions or blemishes, the higher the clarity grade. Clarity grades range from Flawless (FL) with no inclusions or blemishes visible under 10x magnification, to Included (I) where inclusions are visible to the naked eye. Diamonds that are flawless or internally flawless are generally more valuable. Nevertheless, VVS and VS diamonds are still beautiful for engagement and wedding rings.

Carat
Carat refers to the weight of the diamond (don't confuse it with Karat, which means how much gold is in a particular set of jewellery!). One carat equals 200 milligrams. Larger diamonds are rarer and therefore more valuable, but two diamonds of the same carat weight can have very different values depending on their cut, color, and clarity.
